Thursday, January 23, 2003 THE NORTHSIDE SUN, JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI Page 7B Obituaries Sudie Godwin Schultz Memorial services were held January 21 from Northminster Baptist Church for Sudie Godwin Schultz of Jackson. Mrs. Schultz, 90, died January 17 at Hospice Ministries of Mississippi. Born December 1, 1912 in New Albany, Mrs. Schultz was the daughter of Mr.

and Mrs. Jacob Willis Godwin. She grew up in the Blue Mountain community and was graduated from Blue Mountain College for Women in 1932. She then moved to Jackson and taught elementary school until her career ended when she met and married Jack Locke Schultz. At that time, teachers were not allowed to be married.

After the birth of her daughter, Suellen, Mrs. Schultz used her creative abilities to design and sew pinafores and dresses. It was when people began asking her to design clothes for their own children that the idea was born for a store that was exclusively tailored to meet children's clothing needs. In 1948, the Schultzes opened Sudie's Children's Shop in the Woodland Hills Shopping Center, which was one of the state's first shopping centers. Later, they added Hardwicks, which was a ladies' specialty shop.

Mrs. Schultz was a well known and much beloved personality throughout the community. She was best known for her quirky artistic abilities, her flair for dramatics, her purple house, and for her love of people and passion for life. She was once quoted in a Mississippi Magazine article as praying to be anything but boring and boring she never was. Mrs.

Schultz was a true artist who encouraged and fostered the careers of many local and state artists by exhibiting their work in her stores. She supported numerous community endeavors, particularly those focusing on the arts. She held dual memberships in Northminster Baptist Church and St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral. She taught Sunday school at St.

Andrew's for several years and was the first to pioneer the fresh palm crosses at Northminster Baptist. She loved both churches dearly and was actively involved with both. Survivors are her daughter Suellen Schultz Ward and grandchildren Locke Ward and Ellen Ward. Mrs. Schultz was preceded in death boy her husband Jack Locke Schultz.
