"This has been quite a project for us," Calhoun said. "We've raised money for things before, but never for an entire project from fund-raising to the construction." But it has been more than worthwhile, she said.

"Thank goodness my children are healthy, so I have no personal stake in this. But it is something I feel very strongly about," Calhoun said. "I've gotten so much more out of this than just raising the money. Just to see what these children have to go through and then to know that we will be making them more happy and comfortable, makes it a very meaningful project." (Continued from Page 1) families waiting during long clinic visits. THE MONEY HAS come in large and small amounts.

The large donations have come from corporations such as South Central Bell, Mississippi Power and Light, local banks and the Junior League. Medical center employees have donated some of their paychecks each month, amounting to $84,000 so far. There have been red beans and rice and dessert cook-offs, a Jackson Academy foot race which brought in $10,000, and a "brick-buying" drive where donors pay $5 per brick to be inscribed with their name on the wall of the clinic, which has raised about $51,000. STILL AHEAD ARE more events another foot race "Fun Run" sponsored by Highland Village and Deposit Guaranty National Bank, a June 1 autograph fundraiser with the New Orleans Saints at One Jackson Place, a seafood festival to be held May 28 at the Lighthouse restaurant, and more. With nearly all the money raised, plans for the construction are already in progress.

Architects from the firm, Craig, Simmons, Singleton, are conducting meetings with UMC administrators and doctors to finalize plans for the building. Once the building is completed, UMC will be responsible for ongoing expenses of staffing, maintaining and operating the clinic.
