Rige 2C THE NORTHSIDE SUN, JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI Thursday, March 14, 1996 High Flying Fashion I've never been so ready to turn my thoughts to spring and summer clothes as I am this year. With the cold winter we've experienced I've gotten tired of wool coats, gloves, sweaters and layer dressing. It seems it has been unseasonably cold, therefore my winter wardrobe is beginning to show signs of wear. Since we've started working on the annual spring fashion edition we've endured an ice storm, springtime weather, snow flakes and 80 degree temperatures. This morning the weatherman predicted a high of 75 degrees; tomorrow the high is 45 with a low of 32 degrees! Thank goodness my spirits have been lifted thanks to the beautiful spring and summer clothes modeled in High Flying Fashion, all from our wonderful local merchants.

This year The Jackson International Airport (JIA) provides the backdrop for showcasing the fashions. Executive Director Dirk Vanderleest and his staff rolled out the red carpet for our entourage. For three days they extended true southern hospitality. The Jackson International Airport is changing daily. Improvements seem to be ongoing, making the flying experience better for the many Northsiders using the facility.

And believe me, if you want to see Northsiders, spend a day at the airport. They are there coming and going. During the past decade, passengers have enjoyed improvements to the airport building's exterior, as well as the addition of a $9 million east concourse. Immediate priorities, according to information from JIA officials, include upgrading facilities for disabled passengers, renovating the building's exterior and improving the building's energy efficiency. The airport provides many visitors with their first impression of Mississippi.

Therefore, the airport authority maintains high standards to ensure visitors feel good about the city and state and that local users take pride in the facilities. Not only does the airport provide passenger services, but cargo services are a viable part of its operation. In 1994 cargo tonnage almost met the projections for 1997. The on-site presence of U.S. Customs and freight forwarderscustoms brokers expedites clearance of international cargo.

The airport is a wonderful, ever changing key player in making the city and state a better place to live. Our three days on location shoot there confirmed that the JIA staff is one reason for the success. A big thanks to everyone, especially Michael Webber, director of marketing and economic development; Billy Tucker, director of public safety; Maurice Whalen, operations assistant; Martin Redmond with the airport police department; Shirley Norwood; all the guys at United Parcel Service; and Steve Wharton and his staff at Jackson Air Service. Thanks also to all the models, mothers and friends who participated. Many of the models were children so mothers were seen coming and going throughout the day.

They were great! Our veteran award winning photographers, Lonnie Kees, Chris Grillis, David Johnston and Cathey Plunkett were all over the airport framing the best locations for each shot. Their task was simple: make everyone happy, be extremely creative, make everybody look their best and smile. They were successful. Everyone has an important role in producing a section such as this. So many different components must come together for everything to run smoothly and the finished product be up to the standards set by the previous section.

The production staff, Charlene Winstead, Cyndi Mooney and Beth Buckley, along with Ad Director Jonni Webb and her staff, Maxine Hunt, Agnes Martin, Lelia Manning and Dixie Hart, again demonstrated their talents. But the key to everything is the advertisers. Jackson is fortunate to have such a variety of retailers. The advertisers found in this section offer everything anyone could possibly need for a great spring wardrobe. Not only do they offer wide selections, but also personal service.

So when you're ready to shed those winter wools and don some of the new bright colors fashioned in the retro style, just visit the local merchants and you'll be ready for a trip anywhere!
