6A THE Johnnie Mae Jennings manager Services were held April 10 from Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home for Miss Johnnie Mae Jennings of Madison. Miss Jennings, 71, died April 8 at the home of her sister in Madison. A native of Anguilla, she had been a long time resident of Jackson and Madison. She had been office manager for Dixie-Readers Service and was a member of Madison United Methodist Church. Survivors include her sister, Mrs.

P. W. (Minnie Bozeman of Madison; a number of nieces and and great nieces and nephews nephews; a half sister, Effie Mae Blaine of McCool; a half brother, Leland Jennings of Noxapater. Helen Townsend Gentry English teacher Services were held April 12 from Fondren Presbyterian Church for Mrs. Helen Townsend Gentry of 216 Ashcot Cir.

Mrs. Gentry, 84, died April 10 in a local nursing home. A native of Russellville, she was a graduate of Alabama College in Montevallo. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Donelson, Tenn. and taught English in the Donelson High School until her retirement in 1969.

Survivors include her son, Glen Aden Gentry of Jackson, two granddaughters and one great granddaughter. Memorials may be made to the Fondren Presbyterian Church. Burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Nashville, Tenn. Evelyn Ball O'Steen retired teacher Graveside services were held April 13 at Lakewood Cemetery for Mrs. Evelyn Ball O'Steen of Jackson.

Mrs. O'Steen, 80, died April 11 at St. David's Hospital in Austin. A native of Tylertown she had been a longtime resident of Jackson. She was a member of Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church.

She was a retired teacher with the Jackson Public Schools where she taught for 30 years, and was a past president of Hinds County Lung Association. She was the widow of Harry Eugene O'Steen Sr. Survivors include her son, Harry E. O'Steen Jr. of Austin; sisters, Ruth Curry of Jacksonville, Frances Lavelle of Jackson and Edith Waddell of Arlington, brother, Ralph Ball of Tylertown; four granddaughters, Amy O'Steen and Mary O'Steen, both of Austin, Elizabeth Murphy of Houston, Texas and Susan Allen of Rockwall, Texas and three great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association. Mrs. John W. Roberts homemaker Services were held April 10 from Wright and Ferguson Chapel for Mrs. John W.

(Sue) Roberts of 2349 Wild Valley Dr. Dr. Frank Pollard and the Rev. Schuyler Batson officiated. Mrs.

Roberts, 70, died April 7 at St. Dominic Hospital A native of Itta Bena, she had been a Jackson resident for 50 years. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church. She was active in Sunday School and W.M.U. and was a member of the Concordia Club.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Katharine Covert of Jackson; two grandchildren; two sisters, Mavis S. Moak of Jackson and Betty Jo S. Sanders of Yazoo City; and a number of nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of First Baptist Church of Jackson. Pallbearers were Harry Simmons, Hank Moak, Bart Simmons, Roger Helm, Paul G.

Moak and Phil Irby. Burial was in Lakewood Cemetery. Mrs. Willie Wilkinson seamstress Services were held April 13 from the chapel of Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home for Mrs. Willie H.

"Billie" Wilkinson of 522 Taylor St. Mrs. Wilkinson, 83, died April 11 at a local nursing home. A native of Raleigh, she had been a resident of Jackson for more than 63 years. She was a charter member of Fondren Presbyterian Church and had been associated with J.

C. Penney's as a seamstress. Survivors include several nieces and nephews including Kathleen Hord and Ruth Byrd, both of Jackson. She was preceded in death by her husband John M. Wilkinson and a daughter, Kate Wilkinson.

Memorials may be made to Fondred Presbyterian Church. Burial was in Lakewood Cemetery. NORTHSIDE SUN, JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI Thursday, April 20, 1989 Jerry Hagan Yeagley great grandmother Services were held April 12 from Wright and Ferguson Chapel for Mrs. Jerry Hagan Yeagley of 4145 Oak Ridge Dr. The Rev.

Wayland Hamlin officiated. Mrs. Yeagley, 72, died April 10 at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. A native and life long resident of Jackson, she was a member of Riverside Independent Methodist Church. She was the widow of Dave Sturm Yeagley who preceded her in death in 1984.

Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Weir of Jackson; a brother, M. C. Hagan of Terry; sisters, Ruby Morris and Ary Belle Goza, both of Jackson; four grandchildren, Barbie K. Thames of Jackson, John Thames Jr. of New Orleans, David Thames of Madison and Matthew Thames of Jackson; two great grandchildren, Elizabeth Strowd and Katherine Fairley.

Memorials may be made to Riverside Independent Methodist Church and Palmers Children's Home. Pallbearers were John Thames, David Thames, Matthew Thames, David Freeman, Enoch Freeman, Stanley Yeagley, George Morris and Howard Weir. Burial was in Lakewood Cemetery. Jennifer Rose Hamm Graveside services were held April 12 in Babyland at Lakewood Memorial Park for Jennifer Rose Hamm, infant daughter of Jeff and Elizabeth Hamm of 4039 Berkley Dr. The Rev.

Wailes of Greenwood; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. Jeff Hamm of Jackson; maternal great grandmother, Mrs. Harper Wailes of Greenwood; paternal great grandmother, Mrs.

Jeff K. Hamm of Jackson. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather William Richard Meadors. Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Jon Edmond Fouche Services were held April 10 from Wright and Ferguson Chapel for Jon Edmond Fouche of 5825 Medallion Dr.

The Rev. Rayford Woodrick officiated. Fouche, 23, died April 8 at his home. He had been injured in an automobile accident in 1986 near Starkville. A native of Las Vegas, he was reared in Jackson.

He was a graduate of Woodland Hills Baptist Academy and was a student at Mississippi State University at the time of his accident. He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and Briarwood United Methodist Church. Survivors are his parents, Lucius and Pat Fouche; and his sister, Michele Elaine Fouche, all of Jackson. Active pallbearers were Larry Foote, Dan Hodges, Cole Spencer, James (Bamy) Owen, Leland Rogers, Gene Cryder, Fred Long, James McElroy and Harry Staley. Honorary pallbearers were Dr.

Ralph Sulser, Dr. W. C. Mayfield, Sonny Steele, Chet Kreiger, George Robinson, Rex Porter, Mike Ulmer, Leo Russell, Fred Hanna, Sissy Martin, Mary Krouse, Dot Ray, Curtis Watts, Frances Watkins, Mary Todd, Dean Bryant, Hazel Thornton and Susan Ingram. Mrs.

Lela Scott Box retired florist Services were held April 12 from Riverside Independent Methodist Church for Mrs. Lela Scott Box of 125 Segura Ave. Dr. Eldon Fuhrman and the Rev. Wayland Hamlin officiated.

Mrs. Box, 92, died April 10 at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. A native of Vaiden, she had been a resident of Jackson for 50 years. She was a member of Riverside Independent Methodist Church where she was active in the choir. She was a former owner of Box Florist.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Wooley Box, and her son, Wooley D. Box. Memorials may be made to Riverside Independent Methodist Church Library and the American Cancer Society. Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Scotty Dorman, Tommy Artman, Charlie Artman, Hugh Shamburger, Mike Martz and Jerry Byrd.

Burial was in Lakewood Cemetery. Happenings Extended Day Parents of students in Jackson District IV, Mississippi Federation of Business and Professional Women will hold its annual Spring Meeting in Jackson April 29 at the Holiday Inn North, 5075 I-55 North. The half-day meeting is open to the public, and registration begins at 10 a.m. The meeting and workshop are free; cost of the luncheon is $7.50. Registration Spring meeting A Preschool Clinic at Ridgeland Elementary School will be held May 2 at 8:30 a.m. for students enrolling in kindergarten in the fall of 1989. Parents and students are asked to come to school at this time for orientation and registration. To be enrolled in kindergarten in the fall of 1989, a child must be five years of age on or before September 1, 1989.

Parents should bring a certified copy of the birth certificate and a certificate of compliance from a physician or the Health Department stating the immunizations are up to date. PVT. 1ST CLASS James C. Colwell, son Carolyn J. and Robert J.

Colwell of 613 Camelia Trail, Brandon, has completed a combat engineer course at the U.S. Army Training Center at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He is a 1988 graduate of Northwest Galloway event features Povall JULIE POVALL, a sophomore at Birmingham-Southern College, was one of the top three winners in the April 7 Birmingham Music Club annual competition. A mezzo-soprano, Povall tied for second place in the Alabama statewide competition for undergraduate college level musicians. Contestants were required to sing selections from the romantic and modern periods and a vocal operatic aria.

Povall selected "Widmung" by Schumann, "Sure On This Shining Night" by Samuel Barber and the Mozart aria "Parto, Parto" from "La Clemenza Di Tito." Her $500 award will be applied to the 1989-90 tuition expenses at the Alabama school as required by competition rules. A church music and vocal performance major, Povall will perform in Jackson with the Alabama school's show choir, The Hilltop Singers, April 23 at Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church for the evening service. An earlier perfor- Names in the News Two Northside students have been inducted into Alpha Kappa Delta, the international sociology honorary society, at Millsaps College. They are Geraldine Kelly and Nancy White. Seven Northside students have been inducted into Phi Eta Sigma, the national honorary society which recognizes outstanding academic achievement in freshmen, at Millsaps College.

They are Tracy Butchee, Laura Christopher, Timothy Howard, Athanasios Mihas, Gus Sanders, Joel Travelstead and Hari Tumu. Four Northside students have been inducted into the Financial Management Association Honor Society at Millsaps College. They are Trey (Horace) Davis, Neil Barnes, George Hoff, Anula Desai and John Kepner. Susan McArdle, a 1988 St. Joseph graduate, has been named to the National Dean's List at Memphis State.

She has been chosen for membership in three honor societies, Gamma Beta Phi, Phi Eta Sigma and Alpha Lambda Delta. Her latest honor is being named to the ROTC Angel Flight where she will be in charge of training new pledges. She is the daughter of Mary B. McArdle of northeast Jackson. Study planned Explorer's Bible Study, a six year study of the Bible, begins its twelfth year in Jackson this September.

This disciplined interdenominational study of the Bible was begun by Mrs. Thomas Constance. The emphasis of this practical study is what the Bible says and what it means today. Pre-registration for the study of Isaiah taught by Virginia Hughes, is possible now by calling 366-4793 or 366-7504. The weekly meetings will be held each Wednesday morning from 9:15 to 11 a.m.

Members of the Hilltop Singers are selected by audition each spring and represent the college during the school year. They receive scholarship support for their participation. Performances by the singers include choreographed arrangements of popular songs, current hits, gospel melodies and favorite numbers of musical comedies from the twenties to the present. Birmingham-Southern College is a Methodist-affiliated, private liberal arts college known nationally for its fine arts programs and its academic excellence. Public Radio in Mississippi producers Kevin Farrell and Sandra Burke have won first place awards in the 1989 Unity Awards in Media competition, held recently in Jefferson City, Mo. The Unity Awards in Media competition is sponsored by Lincoln University to recognize outstanding coverage of issues concerning minorities.

The University of Mississippi chapter of Chi Omega sorority has elected new officers to serve for the coming year. Northside students elected to serve the Tau Chapter are Lucy McArthur, secretary; and Key Neville, social chairperson. MRS. HYLDA C. MEEKS of 3930 Hawthorne was honored recently with a banquet at Ramada Inn Coliseum and a reception at the City Hall.

Friends and members of the Order of the Eastern Star had come from all over the United States to pay tribute to her. Madison United Methodist Church will sponsor a parenting course entitled "Developing Capable People." The of the classes will be on building selfesteem and decision-making skills in children. The four session course will be led by Angela Robertson, director of The Ark. Sessions will be held in the church fellowship hall on consecutive Tuesdays beginning April 18 through May 9 from 7-9 p.m. The cost will be $25, which includes support materials and refreshments. Concert set The choir of 26 voices will perform a program of sacred and secular music at St. Philip's, 5400 Old Canton Rd. The choir is under the direction of James Litton. They will perform the Berlioz "Te Deum" at Carnegie Hall in the late spring. There is a minimum donation of $5.
